Celebrating Legacy and Love: Qtopia Sydney Unveils the Wall of Love Courtyard

November 25, 2024

A remarkable milestone was recently celebrated at the NSW Parliament House with the 70th birthday of Qtopia Sydney’s Emeritus Founding Chair, David Polson AM. This intimate luncheon brought together representatives from all three levels of government, including the Hon. Tanya Plibersek MP, the Hon. Alex Greenwich MP, and local government leaders, to honour David’s extraordinary contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community.

David Polson is widely celebrated as one of Australia’s earliest diagnosed HIV/AIDS survivors and a tireless advocate for equality and kindness. Reflecting on his journey and the care of his late doctor, Professor David Cooper, the Hon. Tanya Plibersek MP said, “Our community in Sydney was devastated by the toll of HIV/AIDS at its height. It is the work of the two Davids – Cooper and Polson – that has helped the next generation receive proper treatment. We mustn’t forget those who didn’t live to see their seventies, as David Polson now has.”

During the celebrations, Qtopia Sydney unveiled the very first plaque for the Wall of Love Courtyard, dedicated to David himself. This unique space will be dedicated to celebrating the heroes of the LGBTQIA+ community, commemorating lives lost to HIV/AIDS, honouring carers and champions of equality, and marking special moments in the community’s history.

Each engraved plaque tells a story – whether honouring a loved one, paying tribute to a trailblazer or acknowledging an ally’s support. The plaques are a testament to resilience and love, fostering a space for remembrance and education for future generations.

David Polson’s plaque was the first to be unveiled, marking his lifetime of advocacy and impact. As Ms. Plibersek shared, “David’s tireless work as a public speaker and HIV advocate has saved countless lives and shaped a better future for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

The Wall of Love will be unveiled in 2025 in what used to be the exercise yard of the former Darlinghurst Police Station. Once a place of embarrassment, hardship and mistreatment, this space is being transformed into an area of reflection, gratitude and honour.

“The purpose of Qtopia Sydney is to tell the community’s stories. Now we invite you to tell the story of someone you know, love or admire, and ensure their name and contribution are never forgotten,” said Qtopia Sydney’s CEO, Greg Fisher.

All plaque donations are tax-deductible, with proceeds supporting Qtopia Sydney’s mission to preserve Queer history and ensure financial sustainability for future initiatives.

Join this meaningful project by purchasing a plaque and contributing to this legacy of love and remembrance. Whether honouring a loved one or recognising a community hero, your support will help Qtopia Sydney continue to tell these vital stories.
