‘How to be a Lesbian’ Packs a punch at Qtiopia Sydney’s Pride Fest

May 17, 2024

Have you ever wondered how a lesbian shops? If they have facial hair? What they eat? How they – you know – do it? Your opportunity to have your questions answered is landing at The Loading Dock Theatre this June for our inaugural season of Pride Fest.

How To Be A Lesbian, presented by Fruit Box Theatre and starring Felicity Nicol – a seasoned lesbian of 38 years – is the professional development course you wish you had when you were young, ensuring the future of lesbians is stronger than ever.

Felicity Nicol is an award-winning Performance Director, writer and artist. Her work aims to disrupt assumptions to espouse empathy and generosity. She is particularly interested in moving past stereotypical representations of communities and uncovering deeper truths.

Ms Nicol is an alumna of the NIDA Directors course, grant recipient from the Australia Council of the Arts, Create NSW, Accessible Arts, Ian Potter Foundation and the Mike Walsh Fellowship, and has worked with prominent artists from all around the world. With extensive LGBTQIA+ community links, she was also one of the Curatorial Associates for Sydney WorldPride.

Relishing in the production, Ms Nicol said, “How To Be A Lesbian is more than just a guide – it’s raw, honest, satirical and funny. It showcases the broad spectrum of lesbians within our community, young and old.

“Over the two shows on June 3 and 4, we will welcome to the stage Basjia Almaan, Maddy Gandhi, Cheryn Frost, Hannah Malarski, Sylvia Kinder, and Sheanna Parker Russon,” she continued.

“This satirical talk show will showcase a broad spectrum of the lesbian community, from First Nations voices to sex workers, to genderqueer and trans lesbians, reflecting a wide array of ages.

“Poetry readings, Sappho séance, instruction manuals and Alan keys – all this and more will be included in this contemporary performance!” Ms Nicol concluded.

How To Be A Lesbian performs from 3 – 4 June 2024 at The Loading Dock Theatre, 301 Forbes Street Darlinghurst. Tickets are $35.
