Qtopia Sydney recently reopened the Taylor Square Toilet Block following its closure in 1988, welcoming a brand new, 18+ exhibition – ‘The Underground’ – sponsored by 357 Sauna.
As an extra special addition to the exhibition, Barry Charles, best known as ‘Troughman’ will be conducting exclusive early afternoon tours of the space every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 1pm until 23 June.
Barry Charles, a prominent figure in the Sydney gay community, played a pivotal role in advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights. Inspired by his experiences, particularly his involvement in the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and parties, Charles became a symbol of sexual liberation. His persona as ‘Troughman’, born from encounters in New York’s Mineshaft bar, further solidified his place in Australian culture.
Despite persistent rumours of his demise, Charles continues to be a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and be a champion for Queer fetish and subcultures. His legend and legacy remain a testament to the spirit of acceptance, tolerance and inclusion.
Curatorial Director of Qtopia Sydney George Savoulis said, “These tours offer a unique and intimate experience from a true Sydney icon, delving into beats and the significance of Queer culture in places like toilet blocks.
“What a special treat to hear stories from the legend himself Troughman, as he recounts the activities of this toilet block and other similar spaces. Barry is warm, kind and a gentleman in denim and leather – I can’t wait to see him connect with our community. There will be those he can reminisce with, and it is exciting to be able to introduce him to a whole new generation,” Mr Savoulis continued.
“Over the years, Barry’s mythology as the Troughman has grown, and this tour is a must-do activity for those seeking an authentic underground Sydney experience. It will be an icon doing a tour within an icon – and you may just be lucky enough to catch a glance at that infamous yellow hanky in Troughman’s back pocket.” concluded Mr Savoulis.
Troughman’s tours will kick off on Wednesday 5 June at 1pm. To secure a spot, buy a ticket online for the 1pm session at 301 Forbes Street on either a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday via the link below. The tour is included in the price of your ticket to Qtopia Sydney.
