Garry Wotherspoon

Director

Garry Wotherspoon is a writer and historian, a former academic and a former NSW History Fellow, and a Co-Director of the Australian Centre for Lesbian and Gay Research at the University of Sydney, 1995-1996.

His books, including Being Different: nine gay men remember, have focussed on Sydney and its peoples, and several have been nominated for various awards, including Gay Sydney: A History, shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards.

He was awarded Australia’s Centenary of Federation Medal in 2001, for his work as an academic, researcher, and human rights activist.

His political journalism has appeared in Online Opinion and New Matilda, and he has worked as a speechwriter for several progressive politicians.

He is a ‘78er’, and he has long been involved in LGBTQI community politics and activities.
