In 2018, the NSW Police Force formally apologised to the ’78ers, participants in the first Mardi Gras in 1978, for the pain caused by police actions.
Commissioner Mick Fuller AO APM delivered the apology, recognising the historical injustice and committing to a more inclusive relationship with the LGBTQIA+ community.
The apology acknowledged the trauma inflicted during the event, validating the ’78ers’ experiences and signalling a commitment to learning from the past to build trust and prevent future injustice.
