Hung
Past ExhibitionExhibition Dates: February 2025 to June 2025
Curator: Jason Jowett (Curator February 2025 to June 2025)
Hung is a solo exhibition by artist Jason Jowett presented at Qtopia Sydney. Jowett was selected for the 2024 Archibald Prize for his portrait of Alex Greenwich. The exhibition explores queer experiences of desire, intimacy, heartbreak, and recovery through a body of sculptural textile-based works.
Developed alongside the artist’s therapeutic practice, the works combine painting, sewing, and stuffing to create soft, padded forms constructed from linen. The material language draws on the physical and emotional comfort of retreat, rest, and protection, translating private states into tactile visual objects.
The exhibition includes scenes of romantic connection, friendship, and self-reclamation, ranging from moments of vulnerability to expressions of confidence and resilience. Presented within a historic LGBTQIA+ site, Hung situates personal narrative within broader queer cultural experience, offering a reflection on healing, embodiment, and the ongoing articulation of queer life through contemporary art.
