Sydney Star Observer is an inaugural exhibition presenting a visual history of LGBTQIA+ life and activism through the covers of the Sydney Star Observer. Spanning more than four decades, the exhibition charts the publication’s role in documenting political, social, and cultural change within queer communities.

Displayed chronologically, the covers record key moments including the decriminalisation of homosexuality, responses to HIV/AIDS, debates around violence and discrimination, and the campaign for marriage equality. Together, they reflect shifting community priorities, public discourse, and forms of representation over time.

The exhibition functions as both a historical record and a reflection of lived experience, capturing moments of advocacy, debate, visibility, and resilience. By presenting the publication’s covers as archival material, the exhibition situates the Sydney Star Observer as a sustained platform for queer voices and as an important witness to the ongoing pursuit of equality, recognition, and community connection.
