‘Up Your Bum, No Babies’ Makes its way to the Substation at Qtopia Sydney

May 20, 2024

Up Your Bum, No Babies (Remembering Stories From The Gay Ghetto) makes its World Premiere at The Substation this June as part of our 2024 Pride Fest season.

Presented by Actor Matt Young and Director Dan Graham, this part memoir, part performance poetry, part history lesson collaboration, is set to have audiences longing for the “bad old days” of gay life from the 90s until now.

Matt Young is an American-born, Australian LGBTQIA+ performer, writer and creator living in regional Queensland, who has worked extensively in commercial theatre in Australia and the USA, and in Sydney independent theatre.

Dan Graham is a Theatre Director and a Disability Advocate who has worked with Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Festival, Sydney Fringe, Antipode Theatre Company and the Ensemble Theatre. Graham’s recent US collaborations include the Atlantic Theatre Company and Pasadena Playhouse, as well as the UK’s Globe Theatre.

Having been in the works for almost a decade, the performance looks inward at Mr Young’s lived experience of his gay identity in the hope of discovering universality in the wider LGBTQIA+ community.

Speaking of the production, Mr Young said “By looking inward to my own experiences as a gay man, I hope to find universality within the LGBTQIA+ and wider community.

“I’ve delved into the recesses of my mind to retell stories of the denizens of my gay existence, whilst exploring our collective past, from the handkerchief code to Polari – things every gay male should know about,” he added.

“Close your eyes and click your heels together three times. Come remember the stories of our collective gay experience,” Mr Young concluded.

Expect to be entertained, moved and probably educated by this personal and hilarious memory play, written specifically for our inaugural Pride Fest season at Qtopia Sydney.

Up Your Bum, No Babies performs from 18 – 22 June 2024 at The Substation Theatre, Taylor Square Darlinghurst.
